Louisiana State University conducted several research projects on the installation in the late 1990s and early 2000s and found fossils dating to the middle of the Miocene Epoch (14.5 – 12.5 million years ago). Most of the specimens belong to small terrestrial vertebrates such as mice, gopher-like animals, and beavers. Some remains of larger fauna have also been identified such as evolutionary precursors to the modern horse, elephant, and camel. Remains of raccoons, weasels, pigs, bats, snakes, alligator, turtles, and various amphibians have been identified as well. Aquatic species recovered include fossilized remains of rays, gar, catfish, bowfin, drumfish, and a whale.
